The Speaker of the House in Georgia has recently called for an “independent investigation” of the 2020 presidential election, with a particular focus on Fulton County.
David Ralston issued this request in a letter on Thursday, which called for Richard Barron, the Fulton County Elections Director, to become involved in order to determine if “willful fraud” or “any irregularities” occurred.
Ralston observed that various reports leaked into the media have “[called] into question” the ways in which Fulton County election officials have “audited,” “counted,” and “conducted” the results of the November 2020 Presidential Election. Thus, “given the seriousness of the situation,” not to mention “the possible repercussions for our state and nation,” it is certainly time for “an independent investigation” regarding the ways in which Fulton County conducted its election operations once and for all,” Ralston continued.
Joe Biden won the state of Georgia by only 12,000 votes roughly eight months ago, per a tally that was verified by multiple recounts and subsequently certified by Georgia. However, Donald Trump, along with his allies, have claimed that widespread election fraud occurred across Georgia, as well as other highly contested states.
Ralston is not the only individual to have called for an independent investigation of the election results. On the same day of Ralston’s call, Senator Burt Jones, a GOP representative who serves on the Senate Government Oversight Committee, also sent a letter to Senator Marty Harbin, the committee Chairman, which calls for Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to testify over the results of the election.
In their letters, both Jones and Ralston alluded to various reports that have questioned the final vote tallies. However, neither representative has presented evidence that suggest Biden’s win could be invalidated, though one report last week suggested approximately 200 mail-in ballots had been scanned twice.
On his part, Raffensperger has encouraged local officials to terminate Ralph Jones and Barron due to their “continued failures.” Raffensperger argues that every single time officials believe that they have “reached the peak of Fulton’s elections mismanagement issues,” additional information “comes to light.”
Consequently, Raffensperger insists that he has been “calling for change in Fulton since day one,” noting that “maintaining public confidence in our elections begins in Fulton County.”
In addition, an independent election observer who has been monitoring the 2020 election in Fulton County, which is home to a significant percentage of Atlanta, determined that the county had handled the election sloppily, though it had not yet uncovered any fraud. Consequently, Raffensperger launched an investigation last month regarding how Fulton County handles its paperwork, specifically its use of drop boxes during the presidential election.
Raffensperger encountered national attention shortly after Trump purportedly pressured him into finding a sufficient number of votes to secure his victory in the state. Currently, that call has been scrutinized as a part of an investigation into whether or not Trump had attempted to overturn the November 3 election results in Fulton County.
